Research log- Alexander Semenov

Alexander Semenov is a brilliant undersea photographer who capture the beauty of the underwater world that most people will not normally be able to see. I chose Alexander because his photography is so interesting and like nothing that I have focused on or seen before. He captures so much detail in his photos which allows the viewer to notice the colours and amazing shapes of the sea creatures. I really view his work as beautiful and unlike any other underwater photographer I've looked at before.
This image almost feels like a cartoon image because of how the colours are all so vibrant, I like that this image portrays that. The colours and clarity that he has captured within this image is breathtaking and just adds to the fact that it doesn't look fully realistic. The shape of the jellyfish is so clear and the outline is crisp adding emphasis on the beauty that he has captured. I really like this image and feel that beauty is highly noticeable from the jellyfish.
This photo is one that I personally find extremely interesting because there is minimal colour beside blue however beauty is a main theme throughout. Due to the shapes and patterns that he has captured from the underneath of the jellyfish compared with the shades of the water above are incredible. Also although there is not a large distinctive difference between the colour of the water to the jellyfish it is very clear which is which in this image. I also really like this photo because of these elements.
I feel that with this photo Semenov has incorporated a comical effect as the image is of a fish and it seems that he has used a fish eye lens to take the image. I think this due to the rounding of the sea bed and the slight curvature of the fish itself. The detail is extremely noticeable with the fishes skin, you can see all of the different colours and textures that cover his body. The blue of the sea that covers the coral in the background make the fish stand out even more as the colours are so distinctively different. This is not my favourite out of all of Semenovs photos however i can see the beauty that he has captured within it.

This photo has a different feel than the others. In this image you feel a lot more up close with the starfish than I have with any of the other creatures that he has been photographing. The close up shot that he has taken this image in allows the viewer to see the detailed pattern on the starfishes back, one of which I've never seen on a starfish before. This image is also a lot less colourful as the others that he has taken as the background is dark, I like this because to me it emphasises the colour in the starfishes and the beauty that they have.

Influence-
I would absolutely love to shoot in this style of underwater creatures for many different reasons. One reason being I have never really seen photographs being taken in this way. However it would be difficult influence this into my photography without proper cameras and technology. Although I will be including the detailed shots that Semenov captures in these photos and also the colours that are influenced into his photography into my own work.
